Therapeutic Indications

Alprostadil is indicated for:

Erectile dysfunction

Men inly, only Adults (18 years old or older)

Alprostadil is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in adult males due to neurogenic, vasculogenic, psychogenic or mixed aetiology. Alprostadil may be a useful adjunct to other diagnostic tests in the diagnosis of erectile dysfunction.

Treatment 1: Intracavernous - 1.25-40 μg

Treatment 2: Urethral - 125-1000 μg

Temporary maintenance of patency of the ductus arteriosus until corrective or palliative surgery

Irrespective of gender only Newborns (0 - 40 days old)

Alprostadil is indicated to temporarily maintain the patency of the ductus arteriosus until corrective or palliative surgery can be performed in infants who have congenital defects and who depend upon the patent ductus for survival. Such congenital heart defects include pulmonary atresia, pulmonary stenosis, tricuspid atresia, tetralogy of Fallot, interruption of the aortic arch, co-arctation of the aorta, aortic stenosis, aortic atresia, mitral atresia, or transposition of the great vessels with or without other defects.

Contraindications

Active ingredient Alprostadil is contraindicated in the following cases:

Lactation

Pregnancy

Sickle cell anaemia or trait, multiple myeloma, leukaemia, angulation, cavernosal fibrosis, Peyronie's disease

Stenosis of urethra, severe hypospadias, curvature, balanitis, urethritis, angulation, cavernosal fibrosis, Peyronie's disease

No gender/age discrimination

Patients with anatomical deformation of the penis, such as stenosis of the distal urethra, severe hypospadias, severe curvature, balanitis, acute or chronic urethritis, angulation, cavernosal fibrosis or Peyronie’s disease.
